El Museo Boijmans Van Beuningen es un ecléctico y distintivo museo asentado en el corazón de Róterdam desde hace 173 años. El museo toma su nombre de dos importantes coleccionistas: Frans Boijmans y Daniël George van Beuningen, quienes enriquecieron la colección con muchas obras maestras.

La apertura del Depot —el almacén del museo— en noviembre de 2021 ha hecho realidad un nuevo concepto: todo museo tiene un espacio de almacenamiento, pero sólo en el Depot Boijmans el almacén está abierto al público. Más de 151,000 objectos resguardados, organizados en catorce compartimentos con cinco diferentes climatizaciones. Aquí las obras de arte pueden verse como una pequeña parte de una enorme colección. Es un edificio en funcionamiento, donde las obras de arte son limpiadas, conservadas, restauradas, empacadas, desempacadas y transportadas.

El Museo Boijmans Van Beuningen tiene una extensa colección de arte surrealista, cuyas primeras pinturas —Au seuil de la liberté, de Magritte, y Le couple, de Max Ernst— fueron adquiridas en 1966. Mientras que los otros museos neerlandeses se enfocaron en el arte moderno del norte de Europa, el Museo Boijmans Van Beuningen se concentró en la escena de ciudades más al sur como Bruselas, París y Madrid. El museo organizó exposiciones con obras de Man Ray y René Magritte y, en 1970, la primera retrospectiva de Salvador Dalí se inauguró en Róterdam.

La colección de surrealismo ahora incluye más de 125 pinturas y esculturas, además de una colección de libros raros y otras publicaciones que atrae a los amantes del arte de todo el mundo. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is an eclectic and distinctive museum that has stood in the heart of Rotterdam for the past 173 years. The museum takes its name from two important collectors, Frans Boijmans and Daniël George van Beuningen, who enriched the collection with many masterpieces.

Bosch, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Dalí and Dutch design: a visit to Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is a journey through the history of art. Dutch and foreign masterpieces provide a comprehensive survey of art from the early Middle Ages to the present day. Masterpieces by, among many others, Monet, Mondrian and Magritte show the development of Impressionism and Modernism. The museum has one of the world’s largest collections of Surrealist art and an excellent collection of British and American Pop art with works by David Hockney, Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg. In addition the museum is the place for decorative arts and design: from medieval ceramics and Renaissance glass to furniture by Gerrit Rietveld and contemporary Dutch design.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is modernizing. In 2019 the museum began a much-needed, large-scale renovation, which is expected to take until 2029. The opening of the Depot in November 2021 has made a new concept a reality: every museum has a storage facility, but only at Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen is the storage open to the public. More than 151,000 objects housed together, arranged in fourteen storage compartments with five different climates. Here you see the works of art as one small part of a huge collection. It is a working building, where artworks are cleaned, conserved, restored, packed, unpacked and transported.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen – the Surrealism museum in the Netherlands

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has an extensive collection of Surrealist art, which first paintings – Au seuil de la liberté by Magritte and Le couple by Max Ernst – were acquired in 1966. While the other Dutch museums concentrated on the cool modernism of Northern Europe, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen turned its attention to the developments in the southern cities of Brussels, Paris and Madrid. The museum organised exhibitions of works by Man Ray and René Magritte and in 1970 Salvador Dalí’s first European retrospective opened in Rotterdam.

The Surrealist collection now comprises more than 125 paintings and sculptures plus a collection of rare books and publications, which attracts art lovers from all over the world. Several iconic works from this collection were originally owned by the excentric British collector Edward James, who for several years was a patron of Dalí as well as Magritte. He is portrayed in the famous painting ‘La reproduction interdite’, which will be on show in the exhibition.
